Elastic Compression

Elastic compression garments are the single most basic means to manage tissue edema and extremity swelling associated with lymphatic and venous disorders. In the case of venous disorders, the transport of de-oxygenated blood from the distal legs to the heart is inadequate.  In the case of lymphatic disorders, obstructed or inadequate lymph flow results in imbalance of fluid movement across cell membranes, leading to an accumulation of lymph fluid, and hence, limb swelling.In both cases, elastic compression garments compress the entire extremity, and in turn compress the veins within leg(s) or the lymph system within the effected extremity, restoring equilibrium between the supply and drainage of the tissues. The aim of treatment is to increase adequate fluid transport, reduce swelling, and in the process, help the patient manage their condition.

Compression garments are often prescribed for treatment of lymphedema which is where the lymphatic system becomes blocked with fluid and waste which causes the infected area to become swollen. There are different types and grades of lymphedema which can be the result of an accident, injury, surgical procedure, cancer treatment, obesity and even hereditary. Anyone can become infected with lymphedema at any time during their life, regardless of age or sex. Compression garments worn when treating lymphedema are used to provide pressure to the infected area which improves circulation and movement of fluid. These special garments can come in varying compression strengths depending upon the degree of swelling form the lymphedema. The use of lymphedema pumps and manual massage along with the garments provides for a well-rounded treatment regimen.
